Macc 2 Stockport 2
29/ 7/2008
MACCLESFIELD battled back from two goals down to draw with Stockport in a feisty friendly at Moss Rose.
County new-boy Carl Baker scored his first goal for the club early on before the impressive Tommy Rowe doubled the lead with an emphatic finish.
But despite chasing the ball for long periods, Macc reduced the deficit when summer signing Simon Yeo scored just before the break. Shaun Brisley then finished from close-range with 10 minutes remaining to earn the home side a draw.
Silkmen boss Keith Alexander chose to start the match sitting in the stands and was soon busy scribbling notes as County dominated the early play.
County boss Jim Gannon, meanwhile, was characteristically bellowing instructions from the touchline. Indeed, he earned himself a second-half talking to from referee Howard Webb – back from his Euro 2008 exploits – after the Irishman voiced his opinions too loudly from the dug-out.
Stockport went ahead when new-boy Baker opened his County account after 13 minutes, glancing home a header into the corner of the net from an in-swinging free-kick.
The impressive 19-year-old Rowe then doubled the visitors’ lead after Anthony Pilkington broke from the half-way line and released Peter Thompson from the right.
Thompson, who joined County from Linfield earlier in the month, crossed and after a scramble Rowe blasted the ball home.
After a scrappy period, Macc were back in it when Yeo latched on to Ahmed Deen’s cross from wide on the right to poke the ball home.
County had the ball in the net soon after the break but Webb deemed that goalkeeper Jon Brain had been fouled.
But as the game wore on, Macc finally began to exert some pressure with substitute James Jennings fizzing a shot from distance that Owain Fon Williams had to tip round the post. Danny Thomas and then substitute Christian Millar both fired in dangerous shots for the home side but neither found the target.
But their pressure paid off when substitute Jordan Hadfield crossed for Brisley to force the ball over the line for the equaliser, and despite a frenetic final few minutes, the game ended level.
