MACCLESFIELD maintained their Football League status with victory against Chesterfield thanks to a goal from Gareth Evans.
It was Keith Alexander’s fifth win in 10 games - taking a total of 17 points - a run that has steered a side that had looked doomed well clear of the drop zone with a game still to go.
Chesterfield, however, dominated the first half wasting a succession of gift-wrapped chances.
In the fourth minute Janos Kovacs saw a 15-yard header cleared off the line by Neil Ashton, while Jamie Ward later belted a 15-yard volley straight at keeper Jon Brain.
In the 20th minute Lloyd Kerry brought an acrobatic save from Brain that 10 minutes later. Graeme Owens then beat two men down the left flank only to be thwarted by man-of the match Brain.
The Spireites were made to pay in the 40th minute when Ashton slid the ball across the six yard line for Evans to slot home his seventh goal of the season from close range.
