Macc fans go the extra mile

26/ 3/2008

ON GOOD Friday, a motley crew of Silkmen Supporters Trust members made their annual pilgrimage on foot to Edgeley Park.

Many of the walkers bemused the town’s general public, who witnessed the dubious delights of Scooby Doo, Gandalf, Captain America, the Cheshire Cat, an English knight, Vendetta, a penguin and a walking banana.

The legendary Andy Mellor and Moss Rose steward ‘Big Jim’ were among the walkers raising money for this year’s nominated charity, Friends for Leisure, which helps to give children and young people with disabilities in the Macclesfield borough, access to opportunities and mainstream activities.

Through wind, rain and hail, the walkers completed the 13 miles to Stockport County in time for the Silkmen’s big derby match.

Thanks to the support from passing locals and the efforts of Gail Feay in the relief car, the walkers were well fed and watered along the way, provided the encouragement that was needed to complete the arduous trek.

After five hours, the arrival at Edgeley Park was greeted with a huge sigh of relief from the weary walkers, who were all looking forward to a battling performance from their heroes.

SST member and Macclesfield Town stadium announcer Andy Worth said: "Sadly, not even the wizardry of Gandalf, the superhuman strength of Captain America or the energy transmitted from our colourful walking banana could help as the Silkmen succumbed to a disappointing 2-0 defeat.

"However, despite the defeat, we reflect with great pride the fantastic efforts of those who had walked, and we collected a hatful of money for a brilliant cause."
