KEITH Alexander is sticking to a tried and trusted football cliche ahead of his team’s visit to Edgeley Park.

Macc face a tough home tie against fellow strugglers Barnet on Monday but, before that, must take on the current form team in League Two - local rivals Stockport County.

And Alexander, who was a Hatter in his playing days, says his current side will "take each game as it comes" in their bid to retain their Football League status.

"It may be an old football cliche," admitted the Macc manager, who has taken seven points from his four games in charge at the Moss Rose.

"But we’re not going to set any targets, and we’re not going to worry about other teams’ results. We’re not setting targets for the season, or for this weekend, because if you do that you can set yourself up to look a fool.

"We could have said we’ll try for two draws against Brentford and Dagenham but with a win and a draw, we’ve got three points there."

This Friday, Alexander takes Macc to a fifth-placed County side brimming with confidence and he admitted: "We couldn’t be facing a more difficult team than Stockport at the minute. Right now, they are the best side in League Two.

"Jim Gannon has done an excellent job there and, if I’m honest, I would prefer not to be playing them at this time. "No one will be expecting us to get anything from the game. We’re expecting a hard game because they’re playing really well.

"Barnet on Monday will also be tough. A few teams are getting dragged into it but I would think they’ve got enough to stay up. They’ll probably want another couple of wins to make doubly sure they’re safe though."

Macc fans will be desperate to regain the local bragging rights but the Silkmen still have four vital games against teams in the lower reaches to come. "They are the games that will make a difference between us staying up or not," added Alexander.
