Darlington 2 Macc 2

Simon Carter
26/ 1/2008

MACCLESFIELD picked up a precious away point at high-flying Darlington - and it could have been more but for a disastrous own goal.

On loan centre back Ryan Cresswell was the hero turned villain when he rose above his own defence to head into his own goal under pressure in the 72nd minute.

Darlington were quick out of the blocks in the first half with veteran striker Tommy Wright ghosting in behind the defence to head home Clak Keltie’s corner.

However, Macc hit back through Martin Gritton. He had missed a series of chances but made amends on the hour with his 11th goal of the season, neatly controlling a long punt forward before turning past his marker to slot home from 20 yards for his ninth of the season.

Then Cresswell put the Silkmen ahead when he powered home a header from 12 yards out.

However, Cresswell’s late error meant the points were shared.
