Rotherham 3 Macclesfield 0

THREADBARE Macclesfield collapsed in the final 20 minutes to heap yet more pressure on the shoulders of boss Ian Brightwell.

Mark Hudson struck once and Ryan Taylor twice in the final 20 minutes to leave Macc three places and seven points outside the League Two relegation zone.

With injuries to key strikers Martin Gritton and Francis Green, former City star Brightwell had no alternative but to play two teenagers up front.

He said: "We played some neat football at times but we lacked penetration up front and the ball kept coming back at us.

"That's where we were missing it today, up top, and although the boys worked hard, and will be good players, they lack experience at this level."

With the January sales opening Brightwell knows he must act quickly to stem the tide of defeats.

However, his hands are tied by a lack of funds. Stockport were able to offer talented young centre-back Jimmy McNulty better terms as- and he has left the Moss Rose for Edgeley Park.

Macclesfield held out well in the first half but were lucky to escape when former Sheffield Wednesday playmaker Ian Ross hit the crossbar on 31 minutes.

Their best chances to steal the game came after the break with Gareth Evans seeing a left-foot shot deflected inches wide before 18-year-old Nick Blackman hoofed a 10-yard half volley into the stands.

Rotherham, who have now won 10 of their last 11 games, took the lead on 72 minutes when Levi Reid lost the ball in attack allowing Stephen Brogan to fly down the left flank before picking out Hudson who buried a six-yard header.

Millers' sub Taylor then hit the post moments later but made no mistake with two consecutive shots in the last 10 minutes that gave the scoreline an ill deserved one-sided slant.

Brightwell added: "We were beaten by a better side. Rotherham are the best team we've played all season."

Come on Macc fans, heads up. There's worse teams than you in this division. You've had a lot of draws, obviously with a goal here and a goal there you could be comfortable in midtable, trying to challenge for playoffs.
