“I thought the ref had disallowed it”

THE SILKMEN’S hero on Saturday, Nick Blackman, had to have his late equaliser confirmed by the referee before his celebrations could start.

The teen striker said: "It was instinctive to shoot but I didn’t hit it cleanly. Then, as I ran towards the crowd, I heard the ref blow his whistle. I thought he was disallowing it but he was just telling me I’m not allowed to go into the crowd celebrating.

"Franny Green set it up nicely for me. It was a well-worked team effort and I was grateful for the chance."

Blackman, who turned 18 this month, was also grateful to his team-mates for helping him through a nerve-wracking home debut. He appeared as a substitute at Accrington six months ago, but didn’t get a touch of the ball and has only recently returned from a long spell out with a torn knee cartilage.

"It was nerve-wracking but as soon as you get your first decent touch, you’re OK. The older players always talk the younger ones through too, they were great.

"I’m in a good frame of mind. I’m not cocky or over-confident, I’m just keeping my head down and my feet on the ground."
