Macclesfield 1 Brentford 0

LIVEWIRE winger Danny Thomas laid to rest Macclesfield's shambolic weekend with the winner to end in-form Brentford's four-game unbeaten run.

It was only Macclesfield's second home win of the season and gave manager Ian Brightwell a much-needed morale boost after their 5-0 humiliation at Mansfield.

It was no more than his team deserved. They played with a mixture of composure and aggression, unluckily hitting the woodwork twice in the first half.

"It was a perfect response to Saturday," said Brightwell. "We had a poor performance then but we had a chat and turned things around. It was vital that we didn't concede any goals and I was delighted with our first clear sheet since Hereford away. It was a fantastic performance and the players showed a lot of commitment which was vital for me.

"Simon Wiles came one and the goal came only after a minute thanks to his cross. We could have been 2-0 up at halftime which is always a danger but we came out and performed in the second-half.

"But unfortunately Richard Edghill has broken a rib and will be out for a number of weeks."

The winner came courtesy of a wicked cross from substitute winger Simon Wild, who had only been on the pitch for five minutes when he forced Brentford skipper John Mackie to head powerfully at his own keeper.

A startled Simon Brown could only palm the ball into the path of Thomas, who thundered home a 12-yard drive for his third goal of the season. After the goal Brightwell's men again got the ball in the the net when Wiles cushioned a Thomas cross into the path of Evans who stroked home from close range only for Wiles to be penalised for a push.
