MACCLESFIELD brushed aside Wrexham in the first round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy although the performance of referee Darren Drysdale left the Welsh crowd bristling with anger.

Although Ian Brightwell made seven changes, his team played the more composed football but were fortunate when Drysdale pointed to the spot in the 69th minute, ruling that Marc Williams had pushed Simon Wiles.

Michael Husbands took advantage from the spot powering home a low drive past the diving Anthony Williams.

Moments later the referee further incensed the crowd when he sent off Chris Llewellyn, first booking him for a shin-high tackle on Carl Regan before brandishing the red for dissent.

The referee's decision however only spurred on Wrexham, as the home team played their best football with Mike Carvill going closest when he sliced a 20-yard drive inches past the far post.

Wrexham's night was made worse in injury time when their striker Mike Proctor was sent off for stamping on the back of youngster James Jennings.

Wrexham had come close to taking the lead when Matt Done ghosted past two defenders before crashing a powerful drive against the underside of the crossbar just before half-time.
