Macclesfield 0 Leeds 1

Simon Carter

MACCLESFIELD Town were undone by a late goal as they crashed out of the Carling Cup to an unimpressive Leeds side.

Ian Brightwell's unchanged team gave as good as they got against one of the biggest names in British football but were caught out by a late sucker punch.

Having created the better chances, Macc were caught napping at the back in the 78th minute when former Southampton winger David Prutton picked out the unmarked Ian Westlake, who drilled home a 10-yard left-foot volley.

Macc almost took the lead as early as the first minute when Michael Husbands forced a full-length save from Danish international Casper Ankergren with a powerful 25-yard drive.

Leeds got the ball in the back of the net in the 15th minute but Tresor Kandol was clearly offside as he headed home.

Macc then took control of the game with midfield dynamo Adam Murray clipping the top of the crossbar with a 25-yard volley before Danny Thomas completed a flowing four-man move with a powerful drive inches over the bar.

Escaped

In the 29th minute, Kandol sprang the offside trap but could only pick out Macc keeper Tommy Lee from 15 yards.

The Cheshire side's best chance came on the stroke of half-time when Thomas escaped Scott Gardner but was foiled by a brave save by Ankergren.

Leeds improved after the break and were desperately unlucky in the 55th minute when sub Jermaine Beckford saw a neat shot palmed up by Tommy Lee, Kandol pouncing on the rebound only for Kevin McIntyre to throw himself on the ball on the line.

Macc again went close with a long-range Danny Thomas drive but they had little left in the tank when Westlake pounced to score the winner in the 78th minute.
