Macclesfield and District FA Sunday Cup: In the tie of the round Poynton Workmen moved into the semi-finals of the Sunday Cup after beating rivals Higher Poynton 4-2.

The East Cheshire Sunday League side proved too strong and after taking a two-goal lead in the first half they never looked back.

Sam Russell did pull it back to 2-1 but two more for the visitors helped them comfortably through with something to spare.

The ever-reliable Paul Reay scored twice with Ed Bailey and Vic Simons completing the scoring. Jon Cairns got a second late on for Higher Poynton.

At Back Lane Vale Hoppers and Bruce couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes with Hoppers captain Gary Barnes firing in a great free kick to give his side the lead, only for Sam Pilley to take the tie into extra time with virtually the last kick of normal time. It was left to 40-year-old ex-captain and Hoppers substitute Pete Danford to score the winning penalty as Hoppers won the shoot-out 5-4.

At Cheddleton Road, Golden Lion caused an upset as they beat Leek side Valiant 3-2 with yet another hat-trick from Dec Fletcher.

Lee Fower opened the scoring with his 10th goal of the season but Fletcher replied with two for Lion. Ricky Mallen equalised with 10 minutes to go before Fletcher popped up to score the winner.

One team that could dent their hopes of silverware are Pack Horse, who showed real depth of character to come from two goals down to beat Broken Cross 4-2 in Great Warford.

Broken Cross made the perfect start to the game, taking the lead with their first attack, Gaz Hunt popping up at the back post to convert a Dan Frost  cross.

The home side doubled their lead 10 minutes with Hunt’s second from the edge of the area.

Pack struggled with the strong wind but pulled one back with Lee Malkin’s 24th goal of the season just before half time.

Pack full-back Jordan Hitchen  equalised with a wonderful  free kick from 30 yards on the hour.

Pack had struggled to defend in the face of  such a strong wind in the first half and after the break  Broken Cross fared little better as they faced an onslaught.

A glancing header from Malkin from the edge of the area gave Pack the lead before Tom Dean nodded home the winner from Hitchen’s cross  to make the final score 4-2.

IN the semi-finals Pack Horse will play Golden Lion, while Poynton Workmen are up against Vale Hoppers.
