While Macclesfield kept their total ticking over at Welling, their manager says he’s paying no attention to how it leaves them in the table.

Few draws will be as hard-earned as the one at Park View Road, something that’s not lost on John Askey. But to him it’s just another point on the board – and he’s never too sure exactly where that leaves them. It did lift them into the top five but only for 24 hours, as Woking’s victory on Sunday saw Macc slip back to sixth.

“I’m pleased with the point, all we’re doing is trying to pick up as many as we can and not take too much notice of the league table,” he said. “At the moment it doesn’t matter, but obviously it’s pleasing to be in the play-off positions. I’m sure our supporters will take notice and hopefully it’ll attract one or two more down.

"There's a feel-good factor at the football club and hopefully the supporters will start to come down, and we can reward those that do. If we can keep the gates going up to 1,500 it will make a big difference to us.

The feel-good factor is spreading around the Moss Rose

“We did well on Saturday, we struggled to deal with set-pieces against Welling, they’re a big side and every time they had one we looked like we were going to concede.

“That’s something we’ll have to improve on if we’re going to keep our momentum going, but from open play I don’t think they caused us too many problems.”

The clean sheet – Rhys Taylor’s eighth of the campaign – means Macc have now had more shutouts than they managed in the whole of last term, and Saturday’s was particularly welcomed by Askey, who added: “We’ve not managed to get a goal, but it’s a good point because it’s not the easiest place to come. Rhys has done well again, and it’s always pleasing to keep a clean sheet because the very least you’ll get is a point.

“Obviously you do look at the table but it doesn’t mean anything now – it would if we were down near the bottom but come Easter time if we’re still in the same position then I’ll be getting giddy.”
