There’s just something about Scunthorpe loanees at Macclesfield.

Connor Jennings made his mark last season with a flurry of goals during his loan stay, and now that Luke Waterfall is in and enjoying his time at the Moss, he’s not all that keen for it to end.

While Jennings exploded onto the scene with a succession of goals, centre-back Waterfall has quietly gone about his business with a towering authority alongside George Pilkington.

The pair have been central – pun very much intended – to the Silkmen’s six clean sheets from 11 games. And now Waterfall can add ‘goal-getter’ to his skill set, following his brace against Southport.

While the 24-year-old’s second goal was a neat enough finish, it’s the first goal that really caught the eye, showing fine technique to thump a tricky volley into the top corner.

“It was a decent ball in from Waide (Fairhurst), I’d better mention him and give him the assist I suppose, and I just swung a leg at it, to be fair,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll score one like that ever again so I’d better try to get that on film. I’ll save that one, definitely. I was surprised it went in, I couldn’t believe it.

“I don’t score that many, I know I should be getting a few more but I’ve got two in 11 now so I’m getting better. But the clean sheet is more important to me, and the three points, obviously. We’ve got a good defensive record and we need to keep that going.

“George is brilliant to play with, he’s got a lot of experience. We hit it off right from day one, I think we complement each other well and we’re getting to know each other’s games better and better each week.

“Scott and Andy are playing really well, and I’d better mention Rhys, he’s not bad is he? Defensively throughout the team we’re happy with how we’re doing. I’d like to do a lot more attacking than I do, if I can chip in with the odd goal and help us get three points I’d be happy.”

And as for the future, Waterfall is hoping, as many Macc fans will be, that a deal can be done to keep him in blue. His parent club might be languishing near the foot of League One but, should the defender be recalled, the Silkmen will miss more than his 6ft 2in frame.

“I’m here for the rest of this month but I’m not too sure what’ll happen after that,” he continued.

“We’ll probably look at extending it if we can. I want to stay, the lads are doing brilliantly and we’re playing well. I want to play football.

“I spent a lot of time not playing last year and I want to get back to playing regularly. I’m enjoying my football here so there’s no reason why I wouldn’t want to stay.

“They’re a great set of lads and I’m enjoying every minute, I’m playing regularly and it’s been brilliant.”
