Macc Town boss Gary Simpson admitted he’d had a much happier weekend once the Silkmen had notched up their first league win.

After two draws and three defeats, their only success came in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, and Simmo’s charges had shown some impressive skills without getting their fair rewards.

However, thanks to Colin Daniel’s low thunderbolt and Tyrone Barnett’s stunning top-corner curler, Macc brought home the spoils from much-fancied Wycombe.

"I’ve had a much better weekend than I have had recently," said Simpson. "I’m pleased for everyone that we’re off the mark – the lads, the fans and the directors have all been waiting for this, it was overdue after a frustrating time for everybody.

"The hardest thing has been keeping the lads’ confidence up and keeping them on the front foot.

"No one gave us a chance down there but it could have been about 5-2, we should have won by a lot more."

Simmo reserved special praise for Saturday’s scorers, insisting: "Colin’s come up for air a bit after it wasn’t happening for him. He’s a confidence player and he seems to go into his shell a bit but I hope we can see a bit more of that from him, because he’s a very good player.

"I’m pleased for Tyrone too, he’s hungry and he works hard.

"I had my eye on him two years ago and I’m pleased I finally managed to bring him in because the potential is in him to get better."

Simpson has a track record of discovering players, as illustrated by the likes of Simon Yeo, current Silkman Richard Butcher, Ipswich’s Gareth MacAuley, Jamie McCombe of Huddersfield and Gary Taylor-Fletcher, who currently plies his trade in the Premier League with Blackpool.

"I’ve had a hand in bringing a few through, alongside the gaffer [Keith Alexander] and a lot have gone on to do well," he said.

For now though, Simpson is looking forward to Port Vale on Saturday and a tricky decision that he has yet to make – whether to restore Matty Hamshaw to the right flank or stick with the five-man midfield that served him so well at Adams Park.

"Port Vale are a big, strong team," he added. "They’ve got quality up front, solid at the back and they work hard in midfield but the more points we’ve got on the table the more confident we’ll be."
