Gary Simpson was full of praise for his Macclesfield players as they showed persistence and character to notch their first win in eight against Port Vale.

An own goal from Stuart Tomlinson and George Donnelly’s solo effort 20 minutes before the end gave Macc their first three-pointer since late October, and Simpson had nothing but good things to say about his men.

"I’m delighted for the players," said Simpson. "They’ve been terrific and I thought we shaded it and we were worth our win.

"I’m really pleased for them because when you go for so long without a win in the league it does play on your mind a little bit. They’ve been doing the right things and we got two good goals today so I’m very happy.

"I thought we showed a lot of character, we had the best of the first half to be fair but in the second half they’ve come out and looked to put us to the sword.

"They got a goal back and the momentum was with them and we’ve really had to dig in and we broke on them and George’s solo goal was a great strike."

While there was more than a touch of good fortune about the opening goal Simpson has no doubt that it was just reward for their labours.

"We deserved that bit of luck, it was a great strike from Hammy that’s hit the woodwork and gone in off the keeper, and George has had another one that’s hit the bottom of the bar – it was hit that hard that, unless we had goal-line technology there, we wouldn’t have known whether it had gone in or not.

"We’ve had a barren spell and so anything that we get we’ll take."
