JOHN Rooney is proving that his wait on the sidelines hasn’t been in vain.

After months of itching for a chance in the first-team, the brother of England star Wayne is forging his own path in the game.

Rooney scored his first league goal at Dagenham and Redbridge, showed maturity beyond his 18 years with a fine goal.

And the junior Rooney insists his thumping strike against Chesterfield was a valid goal.

"He’s convinced it crossed the line," said Keith Alexander. "It was a terrific shot and he had a good game as well. We need to be playing better than we have been to give him the regular run in the side he needs.

"He’s not quite quick enough to play out wide but not big and strong enough to play through the middle. We’ve got to find him a spot in a midfield three or just behind the front two."
