WAYNE Rooney’s younger brother illustrated Macc boss Keith Alexander’s need for a reserve team next season.

Seventeen-year-old John Rooney came closest to scoring on Saturday, but Alexander says that the way he tired towards the end of the game proved that the club must provide a stepping stone between the youth and first team squads.

"I thought he did very well," said the Macc manager. "He’s a useful prospect, he was unlucky not to score and I thought he was very lively. As expected, he tired towards the end of the game.

"A lot of Chester’s youngsters looked more match-fit than ours and that’s down to the fact that we haven’t got a reserve team. It’s a big step from youth team to first team football. We’ll put that right next year and the likes of John and other lads should come through a bit quicker then."
