Macc’s victory over Welling made their manager a happy man – and John Askey admits his own excitement levels are on the rise.
The come-from-behind win kept Macc Town in third, and perhaps more importantly established an 11-point gap to Woking in sixth.
“I’d have been really disappointed if we hadn’t taken the three points,” said Askey. “We needed the three points or we would have been very disappointed, more with the performance than dropping two points.
“But we go home and everybody’s happy and we’ll move on to the next game, it’s starting to get exciting isn’t it? “Even I’m getting excited. Well, a bit.”
Amid that excitement Askey was full of praise for his double-barrelled hitman, Matthew Barnes-Homer, who netted twice in his first start since the defeat at Bristol Rovers on December 28.
‘Barnesy’ showed his eye for goal to leave Chris Bush floundering in hitting the Silkmen’s second equaliser.
He then found the space to nod in a pull-back from Adriano Moke for the winner.
“Barnesy is a very strong player, on another day he could have had four or five goals,” added Askey. “But I’m sure the two will give him loads of confidence going into the next game, which I think he needed.”
And that confidence showed as, days later, Barnes-Homer continued on the goal trail, opening the scoring in Macc's derby win at home to Altrincham, and finding the time to have a hand in Adriano Moke's second-half winner.
