Silkmen boss Gary Simpson has completed his summer transfer activity, with the addition of a dependable full-back and a talented young goalkeeper.

Former Derby County trainee Jason Beardsley completed a successful trial period at the Moss Rose by signing a 12-month deal to provide cover and competition for the likes of Izak Reid and Carl Tremarco.

The 21-year-old also had a loan spell at Notts County before a short stint in America with second-tier side FC Tampa Bay was cut short by a desire to return to the UK.

Beardsley did have a trial with League One side Oldham Athletic, playing in a friendly against Barrow, but manager Paul Dickov released him shortly afterwards.

Simpson also added 19-year-old goalkeeper Jack Cudworth from last Saturday’s friendly opponents, Rhyl.

The stopper, who has had a spell at Preston North End earlier in his fledgling career, impressed the Macc boss in pre-season with his confidence and positivity, despite his years.

Cudworth came on for a short cameo role as Macc eased to a 1-0 win against his former club on Saturday.

"Jason can play anywhere across the back," said Simpson. "That allows me to mix and match a little bit, and these lads – with a mix of young players and more experienced ones – make up a squad that’s quite strong."
