MACCLESFIELD Town have scrapped the proposed change to the club's crest, following outraged fans' protests.

The planned change from the town's heraldic symbol to a lion's head caused scores of Silkmen fans to register their disgust at what they saw as an unnecessary change and a poor design.

Hundreds of fans registered their unhappiness, and an internet petition against the new logo received more than 50 hits.

Many were raging that the fans had not been consulted about the change, while most simply disliked the new design.

Although the new crest was intended to mark a new era in Macclesfield Town's history, the club has responded to fans' opinions, and decided to keep the original badge.

In an announcement on the official website, club chairman Rob Bickerton said: "I agree that we underestimated the extent of our supporters' love for the badge. Therefore we will move quickly to reverse last week's decisions and reinstate the old crest."

The new badge was to have been printed on next season's striking new home kit but, after people power forced the club's hand, its kit manufacturers A-Line must now replace the new crest with the original in time for the kit's official launch next month.

The new strip, designed by Macc fan Colin Farnworth, features an S-shaped 'silk' thread on the shirt and shorts, recognising the town's long association with the silk trade, and will be worn by the Silkmen for the Notts County game on May 5.

  • THE club's 2007 AGM is to take place on April 25 at 7.30pm in the McIlroy Suite.
