MACCLESFIELD Town manager Keith Alexander has signed a contract extension to stay at the club until summer 2012.

The new deal means Alexander and assistant manager Gary Simpson will remain at the Moss Rose for another two-and-a-half years.

The news was followed by Alexander vowing to tie some of the club’s prize assets down to longer deals to ensure a period of stablity for Macc.

"Obviously I’m pleased to have signed a new deal," he said. "Now we can knuckle down and look at getting several of the players we have here signed up.

"It’s never an easy decision when you’re considering your future but I’ve been about a long while and I think it’s right to try to finish what we’ve started here.

"We’ve got a lot of young players that we want to tie down to longer deals."

Alexander took over from Ian Brightwell at the tail end of the 2007/08 season and steered the club away from the relegation zone.

Overhaul

A 20th-place finish last season was undoubtedly a huge disappointment for Alexander, who promptly ripped apart his squad and the overhaul has paid dividends with a number of impressive and eye-catching performances for the fans to enjoy this season.

Chairman Mike Rance was delighted that a proven lower-league manager such as Alexander has agreed to a new contract.

"We’re looking forward to giving Keith and his squad a period of stability to allow them to realise their potential," he said.

As the Silkmen prepare to take on Northampton Town tonight [Wed] Alexander was clearly excited about the challenges ahead.

"The regular supporters who watch us week in, week out will know that we’re better suited to take on the challenges of a League Two season now," continnued Alexander.

"We want to progress. We’re young and hungry but it’s fair to say we’ve looked a better, more solid team when we’ve had some more experienced players in the side. It’s a fine balance that we’ve got to marry together.

"I like this club, I like the people I work for and work with and that counts for a lot."
