Some?of the biggest names in Macclesfield Town’s history are reuniting, teaming up to face a Premier League side and boost the club coffers.

The club’s slightly older fans may remember the 1997 team who first got the Silkmen into the Football League. Now that the club is battling crippling debts those same men are agreeing to don the shirt once more to ease the cash shortfall.

The match is scheduled for Sunday October 13, the weekend of the autumn international break and organisers are keen to see a good turnout as some of the English game’s top names descend on the Moss Rose.

Ex-Macc players who’ve agreed to join the fun include the famous faces above and, as the Express went to press another favourite four – Rae Ingram, George Abbey, Ryan Price and Neil Sorvel – were also shining up their boots in readiness.

There’s also rumoured to be an appearance in the pipeline for James Gorfin, the local businessman who made a big cash donation in return for a 10-minute stint in the pre-season game against Stoke but exited the friendly with a groin injury.

While short-term associate director Andy Scott beavers away behind the scenes club manager John Askey and assistant Efe Sodje are badgering their old mates as they look to construct a team fit to face a Premier League XI, put together with the help of former Everton and Newcastle defender Steve Watson.

“I hope a lot of people turn out to support us,” said the current Macc boss. “We need plenty of bodies coming down.

“We’ve not confirmed a full team yet but we’ve got some of the legends coming down and I know that when I get some of the other lads from the old days on the phone they’ll be happy to play.”
