SAMMY McIlroy made a triumphant return to the Moss Rose as Macclesfield winless run was stretched to nine games.

The popular Northern Irishman enjoyed a fine welcome but he spoiled the party as his new team took all the points with a bizarre 85th minute goal.

Maltese international Luke Dimech could only slice a clearance onto his own cross bar allowing Garry Thompson to thump home the winner from six yards.

Macc should have taken the lead in the 18th minute, but Martin Gritton squandered a penalty when he hit a weak shot straight at young Shrimpers keeper Scott Loach.

However Gritton could make no mistake five minutes later when he converted a pinpoint Gareth Evans cross with a four yard header.

The lead was short lived with Thompson picking out the unmarked Matt Blinkhorn who stroked home from 15 yards.

Meanwhile, Macc have sold Kevin McIntyre to Shrewsbury for £50,000 and agreed to cancel the contract of Andrew Murray. Defender Andrew Teague has joined Blue Square North side Tamworth.
