MACCLESFIELD registered their first back-to-back league wins since November with a vital victory.

The Silkmen came from behind against Shrewsbury with stunning strikes from Jamie Tolley and Franny Green in the last 10 minutes to take all three points.

Shaun Brisley came in for on-loan Shrew Neil Ashton at left-back while Sean Hessey switched to right-back in place of Izak Reid.

The visitors, looking to impress new manager Paul Simpson, were first to threaten, Marc Pugh dancing past a host of defenders and forcing a fine save from Jonny Brain.

The returning Kevin McIntyre almost scored moments later but his clever chip bounced off the top of the crossbar.

With just 10 minutes on the clock, Shrewsbury’s third chance came when McIntyre sent Marc Tierney on an overlap and his low ball was hit wide by David Hunt.

Tolley had Macc’s first strike on goal, volleying just wide when a clearance fell straight to him.

Shortly before the half-hour mark, James Jennings’ neat through-ball for Gareth Evans saw the young striker upended by the last defender Tierney, who was fortunate to receive no more than a yellow card.

The last action of a scoreless first-half saw the dangerous Pugh go down in the box but he also saw yellow, referee Neil Swarbrick booking him for diving.

In a quiet opening to a second half that saw neither side take a decisive advantage, Pugh was again denied by a smart save by Brain at his near post.

With 25 minutes left, Shrewsbury took the lead. Pugh’s pass was missed by the back four and substitute Dave Hibbert, who was sold by Simpson during their time at Preston, fired past the helpless Brain.

It could have got worse for Macc five minutes later, but Asa Hall was wasteful from 12 yards out. In an excellent outing for the keeper, Brain took a smart catch from a Ben Davies free-kick as the last 10 minutes approached.

Martin Gritton fed Tolley and his volley from the edge of the box beat Glyn Garner’s despairing dive to silence the Shrews fans who had booed their former skipper from the opening whistle.

While a point would have been welcome at that late stage, Green then made sure Macc got all three when he cut inside from the right hand side and arrowed a deadly shot into the far corner to spark delight on the terraces.

With three minutes on the clock Macc then defended in numbers to secure their first win at the Moss Rose since November.
