MACC boss Keith Alexander pointed to the clinical finishing of Leon Osman as an example to his players.

The midfielder fired a volley into the top corner for what proved to be the winning goal, while Alexander was left to rue early chances for Nat Brown, Terry Dunfield and Simon Yeo’s injury-time effort, none of which were capitalised upon.

"We had a couple of great chances during the course of the game," he reflected. "You’d fancy Nat to score that header and on another day it might have gone our way.

"We had chances but it just shows you that we’ve got to score them.

"Everton had the majority of the play but we had the better chances.

"That has been the story of our season."

He was also disappointed by the referee’s refusal to award a penalty when Danny Thomas was bundled over by Phil Jagielka.

"I’ve seen them given but you don’t often get them against Premier League teams," he added.
