Midfielder David Gonzalez has left Macclesfield Town, after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent.

The Spaniard, a former Barcelona and Real Oviedo youth player, made 11 league appearances for the Silkmen, as well as playing in an FA Cup qualifying-round match against Wrexham.

A former team-mate of Manchester United's David de Gea, Gonzalez impressed John Askey in a two-week summer trial enough to earn a deal with the club.

The 24-year-old, who won the 2007 Under-17 European Championship with his country, signed at the Moss Rose in July after playing last season in Spain's third tier with Caudal, a campaign which was hampered by injury.

Gonzalez hasn't been seen in action for Macc since the 1-1 draw at Nuneaton Town in November and has now returned to Spain. He announced his departure from England on Twitter on Tuesday.

"David was nearing the end of his contract and asked if he could leave early to return to Spain for Christmas and then seek new playing opportunities," confirmed club chairman Mark Blower.

"He is a fantastic lad and technically very capable. He leaves the club with our very best wishes."

Elsewhere, one player who will be seen at Macc in the New Year is Denny Johnstone.

Scottish recruit Johnstone, 19, has played four times in the league and in the recent FA Trophy loss at Altrincham.

The striker hit his first for the Silkmen - completing the scoring in Macc's 5-1 win at Alfreton last Saturday - and has extended his loan deal from Birmingham City until January 7.
