MACC Town boss Keith Alexander has dismissed rumours linking him with a switch to Cheshire rivals Crewe Alexandra.

Alexander, who is contracted to Macclesfield until the end of next season, denied that he is the subject of interest by the manager-less Railwaymen.

Steve Holland was sacked by the Gresty Road club last month and Crewe’s legendary figure Dario Gradi, who has taken over team affairs in the short-term, has publicly stated that they need to hire an experienced manager to replace him.

But Alexander has nailed his colours to the mast - and they’re blue.

"It’s news to me if Crewe are interested," he told the Express. "I’ve done my apprenticeship in football management and I know I’m capable of doing a good job, but I’m doing a job at Macc and I’m happy here."

It would come as little surprise that Alexander, who led Lincoln to four successive play-off appearances, would be a target for clubs but he went on: "I hear about these things and people will probably always want to talk to me because I do the job on low money and limited resources."

The news will come as a relief to Moss Rose fans, and Alexander paid tribute to them for their part in a run that has seen the Silkmen collect eight points from the last five league games and earn themselves an FA Cup third-round clash at home against Premiership Everton.

"The fans have been very supportive of us, at home and away," he enthused.

"We know they’ve had a lot of travelling to do recently but they have given us great support, which always helps, and we’re hoping for more of the same this week."

The manager is focused only on the next match, in which Macc travel to a Chesterfield side with a few injury problems, but he added: "It will be a difficult game against a very good team.

"Any side with Jack Lester will be a threat, there are a lot of good players there and I’m sure they’ll be up there at the end of the season."

In the meantime, the manager will look at trying to hang onto players who are attracting interest from other clubs.

"We don’t want to lose good players but those lads who are playing well at this level will always get looked at by teams higher up who have more money to spend, that’s just the way it is," said Alexander.

"With the exception of the Wycombe game, we’ve been doing well in recent weeks, and I’ve used more or less the same 16 players so it’s up to the ones in the team to continue doing well."
