JOHN Askey has revealed: I’ll do anything for this club.

The Macclesfield assistant manager was handed six months’ notice at the end of November.

The 41-year-old is still unclear whether he has a long-term future with the Silkmen, though he is desperate to stay at the club he joined more than 20 years ago.

"I’ll do anything they want me to do," said Askey. "I have always enjoyed being at the club and always will.

"I’m prepared to do anything within reason. As long as it’s to do with football, I’m more than happy to carry on at the club."

Since having his contract terminated last month, the fans’ favourite has not been involved with the first team on match days.

When the Silkmen faced Lincoln City at Sincil Bank, manager Brian Horton sent him to watch Cheltenham - Macc’s opponents the following week.

Last Saturday Askey was put in charge of the Town youth team for their clash with Wrexham and, last night (Tuesday), while the Silkmen were taking on Cambridge United in the LDV Vans Trophy area quarter-final, the assistant boss was sent on a scouting mission at Northwich’s FA Cup second replay with Woking.

Macclesfield have said they hope to be able to offer Askey, who first joined Macc in 1983, a position at club when his present deal expires in May, though they have not said in what capacity.

One possibility would be for Askey to continue as youth team chief, a position which is now vacant following the club’s decision to axe coach Steve Carroll, one of several backroom staff to be forced out in cost-cutting measures.

Meanwhile, Ian Brightwell (foot) and Danny Swailes (back) will be available for Saturday’s visit of Barnet after recovering from injury which has ruled the experience pair out of Macc’s last two League games.

Tony Barras continues to be troubled by a hip problem, while Mark Bailey has spent the week at Lilleshall in a bid to resolve an on-going Achilles injury.
