There were no excuses from Matty Hamshaw, after he skied the Silkmen’s best chance of the match at Swindon Town.

Macclesfield were repelling the Robins’ pressure and maintained the deadlock for more than an hour when George Donnelly and Waide Fairhurst combined to put him in, but the midfielder, renowned for his ball-striking prowess, snatched at his shot and found only the empty stand behind Wes Foderingham’s goal.

"I would back myself to score with that chance," admitted the 30-year-old. "I should have had a touch to be fair, I tried hitting it and it has bobbled up but I won't be making an excuse out of that, I should have done better.

"We are own harshest critic, I don’t need anybody to tell me what I should have done but it’s just frustrating when you see all the hard work the lads have put in and you want to give them a bit of a reward."

Hamshaw admits that the dressing room was deflated after the loss, and the late dismissal of Nat Brown, but points to their hosts’ comparative riches as a crucial factor in their success so far this term.

"We’re frustrated that we didn't get a point," said the former Sheffield Wednesday man. "Browny’s a bit down in the dumps because he’s not that type of player, I’m sure if he has caught him it was accidental but until I see it I can’t comment, obviously.

"I think the gaffer’s brilliant at working the miracles he is.

"I don’t think he gets the credit he should get because he does a fantastic job with a limited budget and us being everybody’s favourites to go down."
