Middle managers may claim there’s no ‘I’ in team, and right now Macc midfielder Scott Kay is quite content to prove them right as the side’s unsung hero.

Tough-tackling Kay has quietly gone about his business in the Silkmen’s engine room, giving an easy outlet for the back four and offering an effective line of defence in front of them.

And while his more forward-thinking team mates grab the headlines, the former Manchester City trainee is happy to be in the background. "It’s fair to say I do that," admits the 21-year-old. "But if someone like Emile keeps putting them in the net then I’m happy for him to get the plaudits, it’s most definitely a team effort.

"Against Wimbledon we started well from the back, defended well and they got the goals up front so it’s going well.

"We’re coming into our own now, really playing well, and if we start believing and hold onto a few players higher up the field then we’ve got a chance."

Gary Simpson snapped up Kay on a free transfer from City, but Denton-born Kay has no regrets about dropping into the fourth tier.

"It was obviously disappointing to leave City but it was more important to me to play first-team football, and now I’m at Macc I’m delighted to be here – I’m loving every minute."
