MACCLESFIELD Town’s chairman is calling for local football fans to come and sample the current Moss Rose experience for themselves.

Saturday’s draw with Barnet was watched by just 1,125, a worryingly low attendance and by far the lowest of the weekend in the Football League.

Mike Rance recognises that the downturn in the crowd is the result of a number of factors, such as the unusually good weather, the credit crunch and televised Premier League games, but the Moss Rose chief is inviting ‘lay’ supporters to return to Macc and enjoy the football on offer.

"The gate on Saturday is a real concern," he said. "It was by far the lowest gate we’ve had for a Saturday game in the Football League.

"The mixture of youth and talent in the current squad really are playing with some style," he added. "The new recruits we have brought in over the summer makes up the most impressive squad we’ve seen at the Moss for quite a while.

"And Keith has added another piece to the puzzle in the shape of Ricky Sappleton, who has set tongues wagging with his two goals in two games."

Manager Keith Alexander has assembled a squad capable of achieving success on the field, and getting results in a style that’s both pleasing to the eye and, in the main, effective.

The acquisition of Sappleton may yet prove to be a major coup, with Alexander promising: "He’s a good player but he’s only played three or four games in the last year and I think you can tell that, which is why we’re only getting about an hour out of him at the minute," he conceded.

"The truth is that we’re now playing some good football and scoring some great goals," agreed Rance. "You can add Tippy and Hamza’s strikes to Sappleton’s goals against Crewe and Barnet.

"Surely it can only be a matter of time before the results we deserve follow."
