FC Flyers reached the final of the Inter League Cup for the first time as they overcame Toft Tornados 3-2 at Jim Evison Fields, but victory came at a cost.

Leading scorer Scott McGowan left in an ambulance after a clash with the Tornados keeper early in the second half and two fractures in his foot means he’ll miss the rest of the season.

He had already played his part in setting up victory for the home side, scoring two of the opening three goals as Flyers led 3-0 by half time, Anthony Hampson having given Flyers the lead.

Sam Moore got Tornados back in the game less than a minute into the second half before the injury to McGowan halted play to allow paramedics to attend to him.

When the match later restarted Steve Jennings caused hearts to flutter as he scored for the visitors to make it 3-2 but Flyers held on to make the final in Crewe next month.

Facing Flyers in the final will be Sandbach Town, who beat previous winners Mary Dendy 2-1 at Newell Avenue.

Two goals in five minutes midway through the first half ultimately won the game for the hosts but Dendy will be disappointed as both goals, from Anthony Evans and Fraser Keena, were avoidable.

Sandbach had opportunities to extend their lead but a clearance off the line from James Monaghan and some good goalkeeping by Matt Robinson kept Dendy in the tie.

Second-half substitutes Mark Bardsley and Ryan Fallon strengthened Dendy’s attacking options and 10 minutes from time they got the breakthrough their pressure deserved.

Matt Morris was the goalscorer, sliding in at the far post to poke home Adam Taylor’s cross.

The final minutes saw the visitors attack in waves but in front of keeper Simon Hilton, who impressed in goal, Jarrod Bowyer and Stephen Gunby were in fine form for Sandbach and put their bodies on the line as challenges flew in.

The final whistle came as a relief for Sandbach but they ultimately deserved their win and Mary Dendy can be proud of their performance.

Subsidiary Cup

Club AZ made the Sub Cup semi-finals after a comfortable 5-2 victory against Old Alts A.

Leading 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from Lee Anderson and Jamie Collins AZ saw their lead slip early in the second half as Dean Duignan made it

2-1 but a marvellous strike from Jon Blackburn restored their two-goal advantage. Ben Rumsey gave Alts hope as he made it 3-2 but two late goals from Collins and Anderson saw AZ progress.

East Cheshire League

High Lane moved above Poynton Nomads on goal difference after a 3-1 victory over Old Alts East at Crossford Bridge.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for High Lane though as Alts started brightly with Darren Hill and Nick Scholes causing problems, the former crashing home a fantastic opener from distance.

Awoken from their slumber, High Lane scored either side of half time to go 2-1 in front and they finally secured all three points with their final goal 10 minutes from time.

On the score sheet for High Lane were James Williamson, who hit two, and Adam Jarrad.
