MACC showed their grit to avoid a repeat performance of their humiliating Darlington defeat at Crewe on Tuesday night.

The hosts took the lead after five minutes when Steve Schumacher smashed home an eight-yard volley.

Martin Gritton saw red with just 13 minutes on the clock, earning his second yellow card for a lunge at the shins of Daniel O’Donnell.

Down to 10 men, Macc were outnumbered and outclassed. Billy Jones lashed a 15-yard drive inside Jon Brain’s post and, with Macc chasing shadows, O’Donnell placed a neat header beyond Brain’s reach.

Alex should have extended the lead but Byron Moore slashed wide with the goal gaping, while Macc’s best chance fell to Simon Yeo, who could only muster a horrible slice into the crowd.

Macc at least had more energy and organisation and showed character in the face of adversity.
