Last Saturday may have seen Macc Town take the lead in the chase for Barnet's top spot, but manager John Askey's taking nothing for granted this weekend.

His side visit Braintree Town having moved up to second and overtaken Bristol Rovers last weekend, and although the Iron languish in mid-table, they'll be no pushovers, especially on home ground.

Macc have already got the better of Alan Devonshire's men, Chris Holroyd scoring the only goal of the season's Moss Rose curtain-raiser back in August.

But Braintree have taken seven points from four home games against the other current top-five sides, with a draw against Barnet and victories over Bristol Rovers and Kidderminster.

Saturday's hosts - who go into the weekend with four wins in the last six league games - still have FA Trophy interest too, as they will head for Ebbsfleet for a third-round replay on Tuesday.

"They're on a good run and they're always a difficult side to beat," said John Askey (above, centre). "Theirs is a tough place to go and it's a difficult pitch, it's awful. We've got to make sure we're in the right frame of mind because if we're not we can easily come unstuck. We'll go there confident but we won't be over the top.

"I'm not saying we're better or worse than anybody, we're all about showing guts and ability, which the players have done all season.

"The biggest thing for me this season has been the way they've come back from the defeats at home to Grimsby and at Bristol Rovers over Christmas. They showed a lot of character there, just like they did after the defeats to Lincoln and Alty earlier in the season."

Adriano Moke

Ahead of facing the Iron Askey has pressing matters regarding the state of his squad. He's had no luck in bringing in any cover for the club's two centre-backs, Alex Grant and George Pilkington, while winger Adriano Moke's sterling season has seen him make Cheltenham's wanted list.

There is hope for Macc fans keen to see the Glenn Hoddle Academy graduate continue in the bid for promotion though. Robins boss Paul Buckle has this week signed up trainee Jamal Lawrence. The speedy winger, who also plays up front, has signed a two-and-a-half-year pro deal at Whaddon Road.

While that doesn't necessarily mean they've lost interest and Moke is to remain a Silkman the results in 2015 - three wins from three league games - could mean staying in the Conference is the more tempting option, as a promotion to the Football League would be a more welcome addition to his CV than seeing out the season in the mid-to-lower reaches of League Two.

Retaining Moke would be a real boon for Askey, who's seen David Gonzalez and Arthur Gnahoua leave for the sunnier climes of Spain, and loan men Adam Thomas and Liam Hogan return to their parent clubs in recent months.

And has the January transfer window unsettled Askey or his merry band? Nope, 'Sir John' continues to roll with the punches, despite him having already missed out on a return for Luke Waterfall. Askey is now hoping a second centre-back target, Thierry Audel, will return to England and continue discussions next week following a death in the family back home in France.

But the constant sticking point - a lack of cash - lingers on.

"This (uncertainty) is what happens when your players are all on short-term or non-contracts," added the manager.

"They're trying to further their careers - their value will go up if they get promoted and someone will have them, teams that can afford them.

"But I'm just trying to do the best job I can, by getting everybody wound up and having a good go at it. We've had three big wins in the league, and wins that will give the players the confidence to go up against anybody."
