POYNTON Under-16s have become the first Poynton team to reach a Manchester County Cup Final in the club's 114-year history.

The first half of the semi-final against St Vincents was evenly matched and the visitors to Poynton Sports Club had the first sight of goal, Nick Cox tipping away a long range effort. Poynton, meanwhile, couldn't capitalise on two one-on-ones with the Saints' keeper.

Poynton took the lead when a 35-yard shot from Gary Wallwork was misjudged by Vincents' keeper.

Poynton went 2-0 up when Chris Wilson stabbed home from close range following a scramble in the box.

St Vincents rallied and, when a ball was crossed into the area five minutes from time, Nathan Kent was judged to have been holding his man and the referee awarded a penalty which was duly dispatched.

Although the last few minutes were nervy for the Poynton team, they managed to hold out for a 2-1 win that books their place in the final.
