MOTTRAM St Andrew sporting all-rounder Fraser Sym has been selected for the North of England Hockey under-17s.

Having already represented Cheshire and the North West, Fraser played for the North in the English regional finals, which followed a day’s technical and lifestyle training for the nation’s top young hockey players at the sporting centre of excellence in Lilleshall.

Fraser said: "It was a real eye opener and showed us all just what you have to do if you want to compete at the highest level."

The Manchester Grammar School Sixth Form student has little spare time on Saturdays: "I play rugby for MGS in the morning then hockey for Alderley Edge seconds in the afternoon."

He added: "School hockey games are normally midweek so happily there is little conflict."

The 16-year-old plays fly-half at rugby and sweeper in hockey and said: "They are really quite similar positions in that you have the chance to set the pattern of play and must have good tactical vision.

"I enjoy both my sports, as I love cricket, tennis, golf and squash as well. I really enjoy the team bonding, which is an essential part of rugby and the social side of hockey."

As well as being a talented all-round sportsman, Fraser from Wilmslow Road, is also an accomplished academic, having recently gained three A*s and six As in his GCSEs.
