WILMSLOW salvaged an unlikely draw from an almost impossible position against Aston on Saturday.

In reply to Aston’s 220-5 off 43 overs the visitors slumped to 8-3 in the fifth over. Steve Fulker and Andy Warner halted any further collapse for the next 15 overs but any chance of winning had gone as 31 runs came in that time.

Warner was looking assured until given out LBW, then Fulker followed next ball, caught behind.

Mark Green and Chris Dillon then came together and carried on the defensive pursuit.

Dillon was finally out for 20 in the 35th over. Green (30) followed nine overs later, and Gerald Tatlock saw out the final three overs with Tom Rowe to claim a draw.

Earlier Wilmslow had bowled reasonably well without much joy, but failed to really put the home side on the defensive and, as they had wickets in hand, Aston were able to play freely during the latter overs of the innings. Rowe was the pick of the bowlers with 2-39 from 13 tidy overs.

Wilmslow’s second XI took maximum points from their victory at home to Aston.

Having won the toss, Aston batted first, posting an average total of 150, given a fast outfield and short boundaries, although Wilmslow openers Walker and Pickup exploited the varying pace in the pitch. Unfortunately for them, various lofted drives eluded the fielders.

The introduction of Aspinall, gave the home team an edge. In six overs he took 3-7.

The introduction of veteran spinner Hamilton (5-50) turned the screw further.

A mature performance of 38 from 14-year-old Rob Hart was foundation of the Wilmslow reply. As wickets fell, Hart played true and straight.

A partnership with skipper Harding (33) probably changed the game but a quickfire 25 from Dixon was crucial.

There was a nervy finish however, and it was left to Hewitt and Walker in a stand of 20 to win the game.
