Promotion dream over?

30/ 7/2008

Didsbury 156ao, Poynton 98ao (Didsbury won by 58 runs) - POYNTON reduced Didsbury to 50-6 early in the match, yet still contrived to lose this match comfortably.

The promotion places now look a long way off for Poynton.

Poynton restricted the leaders of The Right Move Abroad Cheshire County League Division One to 15-0 after 11 overs, then took six wickets in 12 overs, with two for Simon Turner and two for Paul Gould in his first bowl of the season.

Poynton knew most of the Didsbury lower order could bat, but it was still disappointing that they added so many.

Aided by arguably Poynton’s worst fielding display of the season, Stuart Stoneman made 33, Peter Manser 32 and Ollie Driver 27.

Jamie Maltman finished with four for 36 for Poynton.

Stoneman, Manser and Driver were not finished as Poynton’s reply reached 24-0 after four overs, before Aussie paceman Manser produced three superb wicket-taking deliveries in the space of nine balls.

Stoneman quickly bagged the next three wickets, including top scorer Damian Stringer for 22, and Driver and Paul Sperring finished the job. Keeper Simon Dunn made 21, showing some touches of class with bat and gloves.

Poynton’s five victories this season have been the same five matches in which outstanding opening bowler Turner has taken five or more wickets. It is unfortunate that they are relying so heavily on one player.

IT WAS a mixed week for Poynton’s Ladies XI. They bowled Neston out for a mind-boggling 12 in the semi-final of the Lovelane Knockout Cup to win by 61 runs. Gillian Spragg took a competition record four for three to follow her 22 retired in Poynton’s 73-6. Then they lost their Tytherington Club Cheshire Women’s League match to bottom side Brooklands, who posted 224-4 with 71 from Sarah Sutcliffe, 46 from Sam Davies and 44 from Julia Howard. Poynton replied with 199.
