Former Lancs coach dies

Chris Ostick
15/ 7/2008

FORMER Lancashire player and coach John Savage has died, aged 79.

An off-spinner, Savage played the majority of his first-class career at Leicestershire, before moving to Old Trafford in 1967.

With the emergence of Jack Simmons, opportunities in the first team were limited, but Lancashire realised his strong leadership qualities and made him player coach for the club’s up and coming talent.

He played 58 games for the county, taking 114 wickets.

In 2001, John was elected a Vice-President of Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Although born in Ramsbottom, he made his home in Crumpsall, North Manchester and leaves a son Richard, daughter Claire and partner Margaret.
