Poynton frustrated

Poynton 171-5, Christleton 108-9 (Match drawn) - FOR the third time this season, Poynton’s opponents hung on for a draw with nine wickets down.

Just as on the opening day of the season, it was Christleton frustrating the Poynton attack, who had six overs at the last pair.

Poynton may well have won without the two rain breaks that lopped 12 overs from the match duration, but their consolation is extending their unbeaten run to five matches and continuing their good form.

Christleton would have sunk without trace had it not been for the batting and bowling feats of Sri Lankan Iroshan De Silva.

He bowled unchanged to record three for 58 from 22 overs with his nagging accuracy, but Poynton were still able to post a good total.

Nafees Din provided the best batting of the day in making 63 from 80 deliveries with seven fours and a six, including 18 from one over that was crucial in achieving an extra batting bonus point.

Despite not being in top form, Paul Gould battled his way to an unbeaten 46 from 61 balls.

It was not until the 17th over that Poynton struck in reply, finally breaking the opening stand of 47 between De Silva and Chris Hollindale.

Despite the top order falling around him, De Silva remained steadfast until, with 10 overs remaining, 77 required and five wickets in hand, he was bowled for 52 to become Jamie Maltman’s third wicket.

Derwin Thompson then struck three times in seven balls to take Poynton within one wicket of victory.
