Macc fall foul of champs

18/ 6/2008

Macclesfield 151ao, Oulton Park 153-3 (Oulton Park won by five wickets) - MACCLESFIELD became the latest victims of champions Oulton Park, who continued their three-year unbeaten run in the league.

Barney Cutbill won the toss for Macclesfield and chose to bat first. However with the early loss of wickets due to some accurate bowling from Cheshire players Emmett and Dumelow, the decision was not looking a good one.

Only Ben Morrison contributed at the top of the order with a determined 43, but when he fell Macclesfield were 75-5 from 33 overs and in need of quick runs to set any sort of target.

These vital runs came from Tom Parfett (38) and Craig Melrose (22) who once again batted very well together - Parfett timing the ball beautifully and Melrose punishing anything loose. Macc’s innings eventually closed when they were all out for a disappointing 151.

Quick wickets were needed to get through Park’s strong line-up but a dropped catch off the first ball of the innings and missed stumping opportunities to remove Leech, who finished unbeaten on 86, proved costly as Park overcame a few wobbles to reach the target with five wickets to spare.

On the plus side for the hosts was some good leg-spin from Aussie Nathan Allen (two for 43) claiming both former Derbyshire players Spendlove and Dumelow, and a fighting spirit that will be vital this season.

This weekend Macc face a vital home game against fellow strugglers Heaton Mersey.

This Sunday, Macclesfield will host a derby match against Bollington as they look to defend their Twenty20 trophy. The game starts at 2pm. Entry is free and Victoria Road will have a bar, barbecue, music and match commentary.
