Bolly's heavy defeat

23/ 4/2008

Warrington 169-8 dec, Bollington 94 (Warrington won by 75 runs)

ON A bitterly cold opening day of the season, Bollington turned in a lacklustre performance at the Recreation Ground and fell to a heavy defeat at the hands of Warrington.

Electing to take the field first, the Bollington bowling attack started promisingly, restricting the visitors to just 40 runs for three wickets from the first 20 overs.

However, a lack of further penetration on an unsurprisingly soft pitch allowed Warrington to keep wickets in hand, enabling James Hughes to build an innings and reach his half-century, ultimately falling for 60.

Some late aggression and punishment of any loose deliveries by Dane Hutchinson (42 not out) propelled the visitors’ score to 169, a score well above average under the conditions.

In reply, the Bollington batsmen failed to commit themselves properly to the task in hand, too often getting themselves out through rusty technique or a lack of application.

Only Matt Dawson posted any score of note with a belligerent 30 but, with limited support, the innings stumbled to a poor and demoralising close of 94 all out, handing a 75-run victory to Warrington.

On a brighter note for the club, Matthew Wood scored his maiden century for the Bollington second XI as they had the better of a winning draw against last season’s third-placed team, Winnington Park.

The teenager’s sublime and controlled innings of 112 was the foundation for a declaration at 228-7.

However, with little on offer for bowlers from the wicket, Park dourly held out in reply to close at 150-6.
