Jim Cumbes admits Lancashire may face a battle to keep hold of County Championship-winning Maxonian Peter Moores.

The former England boss led the Red Rose to their first outright title in 77 years last week.

The triumph enhanced his reputation as county cricket’s best coach, and he has already been linked with the vacant job with Sri Lanka.

Macclesfield-born Moores, also helped unfancied Sussex to the title in 2003. But England’s loss was Lancashire’s gain as, after moving to Old Trafford just weeks after that axing, he transformed the club and turned them into champions.

His deal with Lancashire expires in March, but the club will be keen to extend the contract of the former King’s School pupil.

"We are confident he will stay," said chief executive Cumbes. "But when you’re as successful as he has been, you’ll be in demand. He’s got an international record as well.

"We’ll deal with that when it comes, I’m sure he’ll be happy to stay. I think he is the best coach in county cricket by a stretch.

Former Lancashire and England coach David Lloyd believes Moores is one of the best around.

"He did absolutely nothing wrong with England," said ‘Bumble’. "He was shafted. But he knows the game inside out and is a top bloke."
