Langley CC won their final league game of the season but Chelford’s win at Appleton means Langley finished in third place for the second year running.

Skipper Stevens won the toss and elected to bat on a wet wicket, openers Laughton (61) and Susans (32) adopting a more attacking approach than the previous week and they got Langley off to a solid start, hitting 67 in 15 overs before Susans was caught in the covers for 32.

Gay and Laughton took them on to 107 but Laughton was quickly followed by Platt and Pattison, but Hollinshead, in his final innings before he retires, bedded in and he and Gay hit some huge blows to take Langley to 193-4 declared, Gay finishing on 52 not out and Hollinshead 35 not out.

The Wilmslow innings was delayed by 40 minutes and 13 overs lost, and Letven and Betteridge bowled accurately but were kept at bay until Frame took a fine catch at point off the bowling of Letven to dismiss Herriott.

Lees and Patel proved difficult to dislodge and took the score to 50 at which point Letven knocked out Lees’ middle stump.

Fulker tried to attack but he skied a Betteridge ball high to Gay the first of three catches for him. Patel remained at the crease and looked in good order, hitting some classy shots before Betteridge bowled him for a fine 47 with the score on 70-4.

Harvey and Gill then saw off Langley’s opening attack and with 16 overs remaining Stevens turned to Frame and Hollinshead, who both bowled wicket-to-wicket and between them they carved up the Wilmslow middle order and tail to take six wickets in eight overs for 26 runs with Frame taking 4-12 and Hollinshead 2-14 as Langley romped to victory.

The duo were backed up by Betteridge (2-39) and Letven (2-53).

It was, however, a great season for Langley (right) who scored over 400 points but fell agonisingly short in the chase for promotion.

Over the season, Rick Laughton scored 500 runs, averaging 33.33 and Ian Platt scored 458 league runs averaging 25. Matt Betteridge took an outstanding 74 league wickets at 14.69 runs and David frame took 44 league wickets at 14.69.

Chelford – who began the day 11 points ahead – secured second place behind The Groves by sweeping aside Appleton, who elected to bat first.

Buys took 6-22 and Bhardwa 2-7 as Appleton reached just 64-9.

Mahboob’s quickfire 49 ensured they reached the target in 6.1 overs.
