It's been a dramatic last few weeks in the Premier League, with the relegation spots and title still not decided with just a week left.

For Alderley Edge there is nothing left to play for other than pride in their final game at Didsbury next Saturday as they will finish seventh whatever the result.

For Didsbury the position is totally different as they find themselves in the relegation places with one match to play.

Last Saturday Edge simply didn’t score enough runs, having decided to bat first, with only 46 from Mark Currie and Adam Wildig with 37, making any real contribution.

Edge collapsed spectacularly from 47-0 to 78-7 but managed eventually to bat out their overs to make a well below par total of 127.

An excellent display from Toft’s three spin bowlers did the damage and showed that, along with Marple, they have the best spin attack in the league.

Toft looked in trouble at 11-3 when they batted, but an important fourth-wicket stand of 57 moved the match back into the visitors’ favour.

At 106-7, Toft looked to be in danger again, but an undefeated 26 from wicketkeeper Patrick Ashling saw them home.

For Edge, Jason Whittaker’s two wickets took him to 50 for the season, a position in the league’s top three wicket-takers.

For Toft, it was a man-of-the-match performance from young Rob Jones who scored a half-century and took four Alderley wickets in the first innings.

Nantwich or Hyde will take the Premier League title with Urmston and Didsbury in most danger of the drop – though Widnes and Toft are also still threatened.

For local rivals Macclesfield there has been a disastrous collapse, illustrating how fortunes can so quickly change. A 27-point lead with only four games left, disappeared with only one point gained from three fixtures, which put them out of the title race.

For Alderley’s game at relegation-threatened Didsbury next Saturday the stakes for the home side couldn’t be any higher.
