King's School fast bowler Johnny Marsden has been selected for the Derbyshire second XI.

The captain of the top Macclesfield school plays for Buxton in Derbyshire and Cheshire Cricket League and is described as "genuinely quick and suitably hostile" by King’s coach Steve Moores, the brother of Lancashire’s Peter Moores.

Johnny from Buxton, is taking a gap year, working in engineering for WS Atkins in Rotherham, before applying to Oxbridge, but said: "I’m really hoping to get a first class contract and begin a professional career in sport."

The 18-year-old added: "I really enjoyed playing for Derbyshire Twos. It is a big step up from club cricket and even bigger step from schools cricket. I notice you have the same banter off the field, but once the game starts the focus is that much more intense and, of course, you are playing against high quality first-class cricketers."

Johnny named Chris Tremlett as his bowling role model, adding: "English cricket is going through a golden age and we have a battery of high quality quicks setting the standards."
