A single from the penultimate ball of the match saw Alderley Edge’s under-11s become National Indoor Cricket champions at Lords.

The team from the bottom of the Edge had spent last season conquering both the Cheshire and South Manchester Leagues.

They had remained undefeated all season with both league titles and the cup in the trophy cabinet back at Moss Road.

Although they were newcomers to the indoor form of the game, the team had to beat stiff opposition from Hampshire-based Lymington, the Herefordshire county team and Primrose Hill from London to make it through to the final against the home team and hosts.

The final was watched by stars of the game such as Chris Gayle and Angus Fraser who mingled with the parents, players and spectators.

Requiring 91 runs from 12 overs to win, Alderley Edge required a captain’s innings from Ed Fluck, which he duly delivered by hitting the winning run.

As well as Fluck, the team comprised Henry Stevinson, Sam Perry, Oli Pooler, Harry Elms, Toby Orr, George Whiteley and Harry Bowden.

It was managed by Andy Fluck and coached by David Otway.

The team were given a tour of the ground, had a training session from the Middlesex team and were able to see the original Ashes urn.

ALDERLEY Edge Cricket Club run a series of junior cricket teams for every age group for players from 8 through to 18. If any players are interested then please email Dave Stevinson at dave@stevinson.co.uk
