Alderley Edge made it three wins out of four by completing the seasonal double over Marple with a hard-fought victory on Saturday.

Captain Alan Day won the toss and put Marple in on a pitch which gave significant assistance to the seam bowlers throughout.

Despite a good half-century from former Alderley batsman James Crisall, Marple were dismissed for 135 in 48 overs.

The wickets were shared around with opening bowler Jason Whittaker and spinner Mark Warnes – who had earlier been presented with the player-of-the-month for June by league chairman David Humpage for his nine-wicket haul against the same opposition – each taking three.

The key moment was, however, possibly the brilliant run out of former England international James Ormond by Chris Cook with a direct hit from cover.

With Marple’s opening bowler Andy Wylie bowling brilliantly, this seemingly small total was never going to be an easy proposition, but a well-crafted 69 from Calum Rowe with good support from Jon Steele (28) saw Alderley home to a four-wicket victory, their eighth league win of a very decent season.

With the second XI also notching 25 points against Urmston and keeping their title hopes still flickering, it was an excellent day for the Moss Lane club.
