MACCLESFIELD athlete Rafia Aslam tasted county gold in the recent Cheshire County Athletics Championships.

The 12-year-old, a pupil at King's High School, participated in the sprint and long jump events, after qualifying as champion in the Year Seven Macclesfield and District Championships in June.

Aslam put in a great performance in the county finals, held at the Cumberland Athletics Arena in Crewe, bringing back gold from the long jump.

Her winning jump, an excellent effort of 4.54m, equalled the winning leap in the boys' tournament.

The multi-talented Aslam also represents King's at hockey, netball and rounders.

Her father Kamran, himself a former athlete who represented Pakistan, said: "She is a very keen and talented young athlete, and I see huge potential in her.

"She is confident that one day she will be participating at the highest level."
