Pete misses out on title win

MACCLESFIELD fighter Pete Bebbington narrowly missed out on another title in Liverpool.

The newly-crowned East Lancs champion was aiming to add the North West Counties ABA Royal Navy championship to MBBC stablemate John Thomson’s 46kg class four North West title when he faced Skelmersdale ABC’s Tom Jones.

Bebbington, with father and coach Neil alongside him, travelled to the final at Everton Park Sports Centre but faced a long wait from the weigh-in at 10am and his bout, the last of a 19-bout card, taking place at 4.30pm.

Jones had a wealth of experience with around 40 matches under his belt and Bebbington expected a tough contest.

Each fighter showed the ability to land long-range punches and work well on the inside and neither gave an inch.

At the end of a close bout, the decision, by seven to one in favour of Jones, barely reflected the contest and those watching were shocked at the judges’ scores.

MBBC coach Jez Hough said: "Peter has had a great season this year and gained a lot of experience, fighting at all levels.

"He can only come back from this defeat with more knowledge and the ability to make next season even better.

"We’re all backing Jonathon Thomson when he fights in Yorkshire in the national quarter-finals. Let’s hope he brings Macclesfield closer to a national champion."
